This performance was created by Dutch choreographers Elshout/Handeler in close collaboration with the Çıplak Ayaklar Company. Presented at the Taksim Stage on March 7/8, 2005, Kalon Kakon is a show utilizing movement, dance, and theatre elements together to question certain taboos on the basis of personal experiences. Reflecting the dreams of nine dancers, this performance portrays their dreams of daily life in Istanbul, the city they live in, through a kaleidoscopic lens.
Elshout/Handeler and the Çıplak Ayaklar Company explore the space between tradition and modernity, redefining the struggle between genders based on personal observations and Turkey’s social and political issues. In Kalon Kakon, they question conventional rules and clichés both physically and theatrically. Pandora’s Box was used as a starting point and a social metaphor in the process. When Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and gave it to humanity, Zeus punished them by sending the ‘beautiful demon’ Kalon Kakon. He hid all evil (pantes) in a box that Pandora told him to open. When Pandora opened the box, all the evils known to humanity were unleashed – only hope remained inside.
